Dull Period at the Kerala Box Office
The Kerala Box Office is going through a lean patch with hardly any outright hits to claim of. There have been only 2 hits during this period – ‘Punyaalan Agarbathis’ and ‘Philips & the Monkey Pen’. An in-depth analysis of the current box office status:
Silence : Silence after having a good 2 days around 95-98 lakh dropped hugely on its first Monday itself. More drop on successive days has led to a total of just 1.82 crore from 6 days. Poor marketing and mixed word of mouth had its share on the movie’s big downfall.
Verdict : Need to wait another week to find out.
Geetanjali : Geetanjali after having a huge opening fell severely on its weekdays due to the negative talk and thereafter had hardly much to take about in terms of its box office collection. After crossing 4 crore on its first week it is now standing at a figure of 4.85 crore from 28 days which is more or less the lifetime for the movie.
Verdict : Flop
Punyalan Agarbathis : Punyalan continues its strong hold in its second week of release too by collecting around 1.74 crore totalling a cool 4.74 crore after 15 days. With no major releases this week it should add more numbers on coming week too. Now it should be interesting to see whether it could cover the big Xmas season or slow down for the biggies coming their way..
Verdict : Super-Hit
Thira : Thira after receiving rave reviews falls into that category of films which turned into average performers in box office. Thus it grossed 4.02 crore from 28 days. As its budget is slightly on the upper side its now hard for the movie to run into profits, but may break-even when summed up the ancillary rights too.
Verdict : Average
Bicycle Thieves : Bicycle thieves got somewhat average talk and performed the same way at the box office. As its made on a shoe-string budget the makers wont run into an outright loss. It grossed 2.38 crore from 14 days.
Verdict : Average
Escape From Uganda : Escape From Uganda which was released with a tags shot mostly in Uganda didn’t seem like got its connection with the audience as it grossed a mere 1.75 crore from 14 days.
Verdict : Disaster
Vishudhan : Vishudhan which released in about 70 theatres didn’t show any chance of growth in its box office performance and can be tagged as the first flop of the runaway hit-maker Vysakh. It was the first time he tried his hands in writing too, but failed to connect with the audience as it collected only 2.05 crore from 21 days.
Verdict : Flop
Nadan : The Jayaram-Kamal movie was expected for its content and its lead stars performances. Though it got the right reviews and critical acclaim, the box office performance was limited to around 1.20 crore (lifetime). Its true that considering box office figures of movies like this aren’t meaningful, but it could have been done better if the marketing was done better.
Verdict : Disaster
Philips and The Monkey Pen : It released to an overwhelming response and despite a slowdown due to a few big releases, it has already made double the investment and have made all the associated ones smile big by grossing around 5.65 crore from 35 days.
Verdict : Hit
