Year End Report – Malayalam Films 2013
2013 was a good year for Malayalam Cinema with several hits – both big and small. The Superstars had a say at the box office while the youngsters made their presence felt too. Overall, it was a good year for the trade. Let’s have a look at the major hits.

After having a poor 2013 till the end, Mohanlal’s family thriller ‘Drishyam’ with extraordinary word-of-mouth among youth and families is breaking records and setting new ones thanks to brilliant scripting! Jeethu Joseph is on a roll after the successful ‘Memories’. This film is an all-time blockbuster and shall end up as the biggest grosser ever!

‘Romans’ was the other blockbuster of 2013. The Biju Menon-Kunchacko Boban combo and the terrific comedy coupled with a neat twist ensured that the families lapped it up.

Dileep’s comedy entertainers and festival seasons make a perfect love story more often than not. This comic caper took a huge opening in the Onam season and ended up as a major success despite mixed reports. The families continued to be Dileep’s stronghold.

This was another festive entertainer from Dileep that set the cash registers ringing during Vishu. The humour and Dileep’s different slang lured in the families as the film ended up as a big hit.

This was one of the unexpected big hits of the year. This Asif Ali starrer managed to strike a chord with the youth and was a runaway hit. Sreenath Bhasi and Baburaj rocked big time and plans are on for a sequel for this film.
ABCD: American-Born Confused Desi

Gross : 9.48 Crore

Dulquer Salman’s comedy entertainer despite mixed reports clicked big time with the youth and family audiences. His comedy scenes with Gregory were a laugh riot and sent the film’s producers laughing all the way to the bank!

This crime thriller featuring Prithviraj started slowly as there were many biggies for Eid but due to strong content and performances went on to become a big hit. Jeethu Joseph became a household name and his next ‘Drishyam’ as we mentioned is ripping apart records!

Another unexpected big hit of the year, this comedy-thriller clicked due to its fresh treatment. The hit music helped to up the pre-release buzz as Nivin Pauly scored a solo hit. The film did good business in its Tamil version too.

Jayasurya finally managed to score a big solo hit as this simple comic satire managed to win the hearts of the audiences especially at main centres and cities. It is a clean super-hit.

This mass entertainer featuring Mammootty and Dileep got average reports on the release, but the multi-starrer factor ensured that the families kept coming taking it to hit status despite a high budget. It gross a total of 11.51 all India.

Lal Jose’s family entertainer starring Kunchacko Boban was an instant hit with the families due to the entertainment factor. Kunchacko Boban got another major success after Romans making it a strong 2013 for him.

Mammootty scored another hit through this mass entertainer. A simple plot decked with enough entertainment elements enabled the film to click at the box office with the climax being a highlight.

This has been another surprise winner of the year, a film that has got both critical acclaim as well as box office success. Lijo Jose Pellisary’s unique treatment of a simple story has absolutely enthralled the audiences. Fahad, Indrajith and Kalabhavan Mani come up with neat performances.

Prithviraj’s crime thriller directed by Rosshan Andrews got rave reviews upon release with the actor’s performance and the unique treatment coming in for praise. The film managed to do well in the urban centers and is a profitable venture.

Jayaram and Akku Akbar’s ‘Bharya Atra Pora’ had mixed reviews on release but the family audiences enjoyed this family entertainer that was a sequel to the superhit ‘Veruthe Oru Bhaarya’.

This humorous film dealt with a strong subject and endeared itself to the audiences in a big way. Jayasurya got another success to make 2013 a memorable one for him indeed. The content and direction came in for praise.

Celluloid fetched Prithviraj his 2nd State Award for best actor and the film was able to be a moderate success at the box office. The film did well in main centers and other urban areas after a slow start thanks to the word-of-mouth and the awards.
