Stars Throughout The Year
.
The major difference between Mammootty and Mohanlal was in the size of their films. When Mammootty opted comparatively smaller films (sans Gangster and Rajadhiraja) and quick completions, Mohanlal took very reasonable gap’s and did only grand film’s. His health issues also took away some of his time.
.
Mohanlal was the star in early 2014 as his Drishyam did its major business, this year only (Around 27-28 Cr.), which itself is highest than ‘Bangalore Days’ total gross. While other star’s movies came and went, Drishyam literally rocked until around April or May. Then it was time for his B.Unnikrishnan directed Mr.Fraud to hit theatres with good hype, but it failed to sustain after the impressive opening. Expectations passed on to his next Koothara, where the actor had a special role but as the talk of the film did justice to its title, it disappeared from theatres very soon. Then it was Onam and Mohanlal came with even bigger and grander flick in the form of ‘Peruchazhi’, which was one of the biggest film produced in Malayalam with around a budget of 12 Cr or so. Again the opening did the trick and the Onam vacations gave some relief’s. But that wasn’t even half of the investment they made. Still for Mr.Fraud and Peruchazhi outside rights became the saviour helping the producers to break-even but for Mohanlal it didn’t do much help among the audience who gifted him a record breaker few months earlier. In short it was almost a bad year for him without a single hit.
.
Same was the case of Mammootty or even worse when we look into the first half of the year. His bad period started from last years Christmas release ‘Silence’ and it became more serious with films like Balyakalsakhi and Praise the lord (Which is even said as one of the worst in the actors long career). The dismal performance of his most awaited Gangster was the biggest setback for the actor and it was the most happening failure of the year. When everyone started writing off Mammootty, the actor had a bit of relief through Manglish which broke even and things got better with his next one Munnariyippu. Directed by veteran cinematographer Venu, the film not only did decent business but also helped him gain respect among the audience which used his ‘actor’ side more, which people expects more from the Big M’s of the industry. His next was a masala flick Rajadhiraja and it was a winner in box office. Finally it was the actors first film to cross a share of 4 Cr after many months. Another specialty of Raja was that it brought back the actor in Malabar area where he literally dominated till couple of years ago. His next was Varsham, which started slow but carried on with the decent word of mouth among the audience, finally giving the actor a way better later half in the year and lot of things to expect from him in the coming year.
.
Unlike previous years the number of films done by Fahadh Faasil came down and as far as box office is concerned it was a quiet poor with only Bangalore Days becoming success. While 1 by 2 became a disaster, Money Ratnam took its place among flops. God’s own country broke even while Iyobinte Pusthakam found it hard to recover its huge budget, even though got many good reviews from audience and critics. The year, also marked his wedding knot with his co-star Nazriya.
.
Again Prithviraj had a decent year with two Superhits. Yes, he had 2 flops but both the films came without any noise and that helped the actor to come out without much damage. There was also his Tamil bilingual Kaaviya Thalaivan but even though it didn’t do much in box office, he got to perform his actor side.
.
Like his father, Dulquer also had a bad start in Malayalam with the dismal performance of Salalah Mobiles. His next ‘Samsaaram Aarogyathinu Haanikaram’ also became a disaster even though it was a Hit in Tamil Nadu. When things got worse with this, then came a Bangalore Days, which gave him a strong comeback followed by Vikramadithyan which also won gold in box office. His Ranjith director ‘Njaan’ in a way helped him to perform to an extent.
.
Kunchako only had ‘How Old Are You’ in his credit while his other films like Bhayya Bhayya, Pauly Technic and Cousins have been failures.
.
Undoubtedly the star of the year. He opened the account for hit chart of 2014 with ’1983′ and registered the first blockbuster in the form of ‘On Shanti Oshana’. If it was not enough ‘Bangalore Days’ also became a runaway blockbuster which helped him gain many likings from the audience. Moreover, his sweet cameo in Vikramadithyan offered the actor a 100% success rate this year. Way to go…!
.
Asif Ali’s number of films stood high like previous years and the success rate in opposite side. He did around 7 movies and the only hits were Sapthamashree Thaskara and Vellimoonga where he was unfortunately not the main lead.
.
Dileep, who use to dominate almost all the years finally had an underwhelming year this time around. Though Ringmaster emerged a Super hit, his Joshy directed Avataram and Onam flick Villali Veeran bit the dust. Though he earlier fixed his next ‘Ivan Madyadharaman’ for Xmas it is now postponed to 2015. Dileep’s wait for next success too.
.
Suresh Gopi had only 3 films, who was busy with his popular reality show. In that he had 3 major releases and his performance in Apothecary got many good words. But in box office he has 2 big duds in the form of Salaam Kashmir and The Dolphins.
.
Jayaram had around 6 films this year and his long in the making Swapaanam released in early 2014 and got rave reviews for his performance. Apart from that he couldn’t make any impact in the box office including few big ones like Salaam Kashmir, Mylanchi Monchulla Veedu etc.
.
Jayasurya, started the year with Happy Journey in which he got critical acclaims for his performance which followed with Apothecary also. Event Pusthakam also had a good role for him in a negative shade. So far he got good characters though box office success stood away for him. But in the last 2 months the actor had around 4 releases and unsurprisingly all of them were washouts giving the actor ‘nothing’ Anyways.
